We see the training and development of our teams as fundamental to the success of each care home. All our team members are friendly, caring people having been carefully selected and verified.

As in all other areas, our standards are very high here. From the start, there is an organised 12-week induction programme. Following successful completion of this, we positively encourage further training for National Vocational Qualifications (NVQs). This supports our philosophy of ‘growing our own’ – where staff have the opportunity to gain promotion and develop within the organisation. All of our managers have developed in this way, each having been selected, then achieving a series of internal promotions over several years, and all holding NVQ Level 4.

Marina Collins, Group Training Manager

Marina began her career with us in 1989 and since then has worked in every department of the occupation, including in the management team. With this background experience and depth of knowledge, as well as her organised, calm, approachable manner, Marina is perfect for the role of Group Training Manager. She qualified as a trainer through the PTLLS (Preparing to Teach in the Life-Long Learning Sector) which enables her to keep to a high standard of training. Marina takes all new members of staff through their induction as well as providing continuous training for existing team members.

Marina visits each home regularly, ensuring that staff are up-to-date on critical areas including:

  • The enhanced need for exacting standards of hygiene and the sympathetic use of face masks and other PPE equipment (during the Covid-19 precautions)
  • First aid*
  • Moving and handling
  • Food hygiene
  • Abuse training
  • Fire drill
  • Person-centred approach for people with dementia
  • Medication*

* Use of outside trainer

All the team (including the managers) receive regular development sessions, allowing a chance for one-to-one discussion as well as identifying areas performed well and areas for improvement.
